Our Mission
From its earliest days, the organization focused on practical, compassionate responses to poverty and isolation, particularly among older adults with limited means. With nearly 100 years of dedicated service to housing low-income seniors, the Social Service League still provides seniors in need with a comfortable and welcoming place to live. SSL’s generous volunteers support residents through League House activities and various fundraising efforts, which have been commended by the California State Legislature, United States House of Representatives, and the City of San Diego.
1929
A community responds
Social Service League of La Jolla was founded to support neighbors facing hardship during the Great Depression.
1947
A formal mission takes shape
The organization was incorporated as a 501(c)3 to address the housing need of many war widows in the local San Diego area.
1955
League House Built
The Social Service League opened the new League House on Olivetas Avenue in La Jolla. The building offered nine studio apartments for young working women, along with shared kitchen facilities and a supportive community designed to help women build independence and stability.
1968
Darlington House Acquired
Social Service League of La Jolla expanded the support of their mission with the purchase of Darlington House, a historic home turned premier event venue that provides a consistent source of fundraising revenue to the organization.
