Who We Are

Founded in 1929, Social Service League of La Jolla grew out of the needs from the Great Depression. Recognizing that no one was immune to financial misfortune, we were officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1947 to address the housing need of many war widows in the local San Diego area.

Over time, SSL’s mission evolved into a sustained commitment to housing stability, nutrition, and dignity for low-income seniors from throughout San Diego County. This vision became tangible with the creation of League House, a residential facility built by SSL in 1955 to offer affordable housing, meals, and supportive services that enable seniors to age safely and with social connections. By providing subsidized rent, utilities, and meals, Social Service League of La Jolla supports League House residents who meet income qualifications, with a strong emphasis on community and shared evening meals.

To support this work, SSL relies on philanthropic support, volunteers, and earned revenue, most notably through the 1968 acquisition of Darlington House, a historic La Jolla landmark made available for community and private events.
